Dental emergencies
Unfortunately, dental emergencies are fairly common and examples include broken and severely chipped teeth, abscesses and severe dental pain and dislodged teeth.
Often, severe dental pain is associated with injuries, which may be impossible to prevent, but if you’ve had toothache for a while and pain has been getting steadily worse, there is a good chance that you may have a decayed tooth. If you have toothache, sensitivity or you have symptoms of gum disease, such as bleeding and swollen gums, see your dentist; don’t put it off because the situation will get worse.
What to do in a dental emergency
If you have an accident, or you suffer an injury when playing sport and you need urgent dental treatment, contact the practice and the reception team will arrange an appointment for you as soon as possible.
If you have a dislodged tooth, it may be possible for us to save it if you can get to the practice fast enough. In the meantime, hold the tooth between the gum and cheek or place it in a glass of milk. Avoid touching the tooth by the root.
Preventing dental emergencies
Sometimes it is impossible to prevent injuries and accidents, but there are some things you can do to try and reduce your risk of dental injuries, including wearing a protective mouth guard when you play sport, going for regular dental check-ups and seeing your dentist if you have any symptoms, such as tooth pain or sensitivity.
