About white fillings
White fillings are very popular now, as many people are willing to pay a little more for natural looking aesthetics and there are concerns about the safety of mercury amalgam filings. White fillings are made from resins and dental composite, which is matched to the natural shade of your tooth for a flawless finish. Composite is safe and durable, and white fillings are an excellent option for patients who have cavities and signs of tooth decay.
Many patients are choosing to replace existing mercury amalgam fillings with composite filings because they are safer in terms of your health and the environment.
What are the advantages of composite fillings?
The most obvious advantage of composite fillings is the aesthetic; with metal amalgam fillings, you can clearly see the filling when you smile or open your mouth to speak, yawn or cough. With a white filling, the filling blends in with your natural tooth and it’s impossible to notice the difference.
Technology has advanced significantly in a relatively short period of time and modern materials are much tougher and more durable than those of old; white fillings are suitable for most teeth and they should last around 7-10 years. These fillings are also completely harmless for your health and they are more environmentally friendly than metal amalgam fillings.
What happens when you have a filling?
Before you have a tooth filled, it will be numbed using local anaesthetic, so you don’t need to worry about feeling any pain. Your dentist will remove any decayed tissue from the tooth and then clean the cavity completely; once bonding agent has been applied to the tooth, the composite is placed inside the cavity and shaped to fill the hole. Once the filling is in place, the composite is set using a curing light.
