Teeth And Your Overall General Health And Wellbeing At Dublin18 Dental Care Near Foxrock

You may be all too aware that neglecting your oral hygiene and eating sweet foods have negative implications for your oral health, but you may not know that brushing, flossing and keeping an eye on your diet can also benefit your general health and wellbeing.

Gum disease and general health problems

Numerous research studies carried out in countries all over the world have not suggested a link between oral health problems and specifically, gum disease, and general health conditions. Researchers have found a link between gum disease and potentially life-threatening diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and strokes. Research teams believe that harmful bacteria can travel from the mouth to other parts of the body and increase the risk of atherosclerosis, a condition, which causes fatty deposits to collect in the arteries. Atherosclerosis is linked to an increased risk of strokes and heart attacks because it prevents blood from flowing freely around the body.

Your smile and confidence

As well as preventing you from developing decay and gum disease, good oral hygiene can also help to keep your smile looking healthy and bright. Surveys show that most people regard their smile as their most important feature and those who are happy with the look of their smile are more likely to come across as confident and outgoing, which can have benefits in many areas of life, from making a good impression at work, to creating new friendships and relationships.

At Dublin18 Dental Care near Foxrock we promote good oral hygiene, healthy eating and regular dental checks to benefit your health and wellbeing; our aim is for you to be free from pain and to feel happy and confident when you smile.

The Importance Of Hygienist Visits For Patients At Dublin18 Dental Care Near Deansgrange

In addition to regular dental checks, we also recommend seeing a dental hygienist. Our excellent hygienists play a very important role at the practice and hygiene sessions can help to give you a beautiful, bright smile, as well as keeping your mouth free from decay and gum disease.

What do dental hygienists do?

Dental hygienists are experts in oral hygiene and they provide a range of services, which are designed to treat and prevent oral health conditions. For those who have healthy, strong teeth and gums, visiting a hygienist will help to maintain these high standards of oral health and reduce the risk of gum disease and decay, while those who already have signs of gum disease can benefit from intensive cleaning treatment, such as scale and polish. A scale and polish treatment is designed to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and along the gum line; this helps to prevent the infection from spreading and may prevent permanent damage to the mouth.

Dental hygienists can also provide preventative oral health care for children, including fluoride varnish treatment and sealant treatment, both of which are designed to protect the teeth against cavities.

How could I benefit from making an appointment?

Seeing a dental hygienist is not just beneficial for your oral health and the aesthetic of your smile, it is also advantageous for your general health. Several studies have now linked oral health to general health, with many finding a connection between gum disease and conditions such as strokes and heart disease. When you see a hygienist they will give your teeth and gums a thorough clean and this removes potentially harmful bacteria from the mouth; these forms of dangerous bacteria have been linked to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and complications during pregnancy. At Dublin18 Dental Care near Deansgrange we aim to make sure our patients have healthy, as well as beautiful, smiles and we offer a full range of general dental services to help achieve this goal. We provide treatment for patients of all ages and we encourage all our clients to have a routine check-up every 6 months.

What happens during a check-up?

Check-ups are quick and painless, but they are hugely important. When you for a dental check, your dentist will have a thorough look around your mouth and check the health of your teeth and gums. They will note down any changes that have occurred since your last check and make sure there are no signs of problems, such as gum disease and dental decay. If you have symptoms of gum disease or a cavity, your dentist may arrange an appointment so that you can have further treatment, such as a filling.

After your dental check, your dentist may also have a quick chat with you about oral hygiene or your diet and if you have any questions, they will be happy to answer them.

We recommend bringing children for regular check-ups from the age of 12 months old; this enables us to keep an eye on the child’s tooth development and oral health, a well as giving them the opportunity to get used to going to the dentist and having dental treatment.

Dental checks

Christmas is over, it’s time to get back to work and plan ahead for 2014. You may be thinking about booking holidays, going to special occasions or applying for a new job or course, but have you though about booking your dental appointments?

We recommend 6 monthly check-ups for all our patients and we also advise visiting a dental hygienist. If you are due a check-up, call the practice today to book your next appointment!

Check-ups are very quick and they aren’t painful, but they are really important. Good health for 2014

Your health should always be a priority and if you are looking for ways to boost your health in the New Year, here are some simple suggestions:

  • exercise more: health experts recommend doing 30 minutes of moderate exercise 5 times per week

  • prioritise your oral health; maintain a good daily oral hygiene routine, take good care of your teeth and gums and see your dentist for regular check-ups
  • look after yourself; it can be very easy to forget about yourself, especially if you have a very busy schedule and you may find that you are constantly putting others in front; try to make more time for yourself this year

Dental Dietary Advice For The New Year For Patients Near Dalkey

Now that Christmas is over, you may be feeling like you’ve overindulged slightly and this may have prompted some resolutions for a healthy new you in 2014. The good news is that eating healthily will not just help you to lose a few Christmas pounds, it will also help to boost your oral health and ensure that you enjoy strong and healthy teeth and gums in the year ahead.

Dental dos: the foods to add to your shopping list in the New Year

You often hear all about the foods you should be avoiding when it comes to oral health, but there are many items you can pop on your weekly shopping list to help boost your oral health.

Calcium is really important for your teeth and bones and it is advisable to ensure you get your recommended daily intake; good sources of calcium include milk, yoghurt and cheese, but if you are dairy intolerant, there are other foods you can eat to get your daily calcium dose and these include tofu, soya beans, leafy green vegetables, nuts and sardines.

Vitamin C is important for the immune system and good general health and helps to lower the risk of gum disease, as well as promoting speedy healing. Good sources of vitamin C include berries and citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables, potatoes, peppers and broccoli.

Foods to avoid

Unfortunately, many of the festive favourites, such as mine pies, Christmas pudding and sugared almonds, are high in sugar and this is bad news for the teeth and gums. In the New Year, try to restrict the amount of sugar you eat and stick to complex carbohydrates and fruit and vegetables, rather than indulging in cakes and biscuits.

Acidic foods and drinks can also be troublesome, as they erode the protective tooth enamel; try to avoid drinking a lot of fruit juice and wine and using vinegar-based dressings on salad.

Eating habits

Snacking can be a major problem for oral health; when you eat, the enamel becomes weaker temporarily and if you are snacking throughout the day, this means that your enamel is under constant attack. Try to stick to three meals per day and if you do fancy a snack, go for fibre-rich fruit or vegetables, a wholegrain piece of toast or crackers or a piece of cheese. It is a good idea to drink milk or water after eating and you should always wait around 1 hour after eating to brush your teeth. For more information contact the team at Dublin18 Dental Care near Dalkey.
